Miscellaneous / What's the kind of server that I need?
« on: August 08, 2018, 06:18:18 AM »
Hello,

I'm wondering how to create a server available over the internet for a project.
I don't want to host it at home, since my computer is not always running, so I contacted a web hosting enterprise (OVH) to know if they could do it. They answered me "this might require high server performance, could you give us the technical performances requires to run minetest".
Therefor I have, again, some (noobie) questions...

- what are the minimal pre-required performance (CPU? RAM? other?) to run Minetest for, say, a dozen of players;
- my account on OVH gives me a webserver (PHP), but no console in order to launch the minetest server. What's the kind of server that I need?

Please help.

I didn't find the right solution from the internet.

Hello,

We have a few unlimited licenses for our Ec2 instances.

If a instance go down, We will need to start a new instance and log in to license smartfox admin, reset allocation and start smartfox service. We use the same
public ip but Smartfox start allowing only 100 users, so I think Smartfox License Server check private IP (change after stop/start) and doesn't accept license validation request. I want to automate start/stop instances and validation license. We have enough licenses to extra instances. Is there a API or way to automate reset allocation?
Do you have a suggest practices to start/stop smartfox servers and license validation?

Please help.

Hello,

I'm doing some research on putting some OSX based things in the cloud. I've found some options already, but wanted to see if there are any I'm overlooking. Also, experiences with said services would be nice as well. I could swear I heard of someone pretty large (thought it was AWS but I can't seem to find anything that supports that) getting into this recently.

Anyway, even just names of options to check out would be great.

Please help.

Hello,

Our work IP PBX has hit its limit on extensions and can't be upgraded. Replacing the unit is a thrilling $20,000. So I'm looking at alternative solutions: VOIP for business, like Vonage's offering, or cloud-hosted PBX (which Fairpoint, the local Phone/ISP offers).

Does anyone have any experience with these setups? Any love stories/horror stories?

FWIW, I'm looking at 75 extensions over 3 locations, and our current local and long distance phone bill is in the neighborhood of $2,000/month. We have the bandwidth to support it; synchronous 20mbps fiber to both locations.

Please help.

Hello,

I'm trying to setup and register mycloudnas and kept getting error:-11 "The server is busy now. Try again later", at the first step. I finally got it to go to the second step in the process , by sheer perseverance and nothing more, and now I receive an error message "The cloud server cannot be connected. Please check your internet connection and try again." It flip flops between the two errors once in awhile as I've tried a couple dozen times to submit it.

The box that I type my name to register is highlighted in red presumably indicating and issue of some sort and the error shows up when hovering over the box.

During my initial setup, the mycloudNAS wizard would not recognize my router as uPnP capable, but I have uPnP enabled in my router configuration. I manually opened the necessary ports and ,not being too well versed on networking, I wouldn't doubt I'm at fault for the issue.

Anyone have any guidance as to what my be causing my issues?
Please help.

Hello,

With most things in life I tend to be a Luddite and very reluctant for follow the crowd. I keep getting messages on my Iphone to sign up for "The Cloud".
Am I missing much by not being Cloud friendly? My major concern is establishing another account with another password and having personal info on another server. Also, as I understand, you need to be in a secure internet environment to access the Cloud. So if I am in a hotel/motel room I probably would not access my info. Liked to know other Boglehead's experience with the Cloud and whether it has improved their quality of life experience. For some context, I am retired and mostly use internet for entertainment and to research products and ideas.

Please help.
