Miscellaneous / Should I use Free Website Hosting for my Site?
« on: August 10, 2018, 03:17:08 AM »

Hi
For those who are just getting into the idea of website design, free website hosting may sound ideal. The website, and often the tools to help you create the pages, are all there. However, as with most things, those offering the service must make money on it in some way. That could lead to advantages and disadvantages with the choice.

For those who want a personal site to share information with other family and friends, a free website hosting service may be the best way to go. The biggest advantage is that there is no cost. There is no need to worry about what the domain name might be because you will know everyone visiting the page and can send them the URL address directly. Thus, for those people, free website hosting is an easy answer.

Thanks

Cloud Hosting Experience / What to look for in a vBulletin host?
« on: August 10, 2018, 03:15:34 AM »
What to look for in a vBulletin host?
I'm in the process of helping my organization find a new host for our vBulletin community. The community is running the latest version of VB4 (4.2.5, I believe) and is having to transition away from our current host that we're very happy with because the host is transitioning to Wordpress only.

The community is paid subscription based and has about 1,000 members, although there are never that many active at once. At most, I would say the forum has 200 or 300 users online at once. (Guests can access the forum, but cannot read thread content.) No mods or plugins are installed on the forum, but we are using modrewrite friendly URLs.

Server load has never been an issue with our current host, which seems to have a pretty good grasp on how to host vBulletin efficiently. Does anyone here have any tips on host who can help us with the forum migration and also recommend a solid plan that will allow us to keep the forum running smoothly? I'm also looking for a host that can help us make a smooth transition to SSL.

I believe the current plan we're on, where we also host a Wordpress site, has 6 CPU cores available and 12 GB of ram. The Wordpress site, however, is doing about 80% of the traffic on the current plan.

Cloud Hosting Experience / Looking for UK hosting recommendations
« on: August 10, 2018, 03:14:59 AM »

I host about 30 sites for my clients, but I'm looking to grow this to 50 over the next year.

With my current host, I have what they call a VDS Lite, which is basically a shared VPS with a proprietary control panel.

I'm not sure of the exact spec but it's basically running FreeBSD, Apache 2.2.31, PHP 5.6.12 and MySQL 5.5.44

Their whole offering is getting a bit long in the tooth and I've been chasing upgrades for a while. They have now decided to withdraw from the market and so I need to find a new host PDQ.

Most of my sites are Wordpress, but I have a few that are plain HTML and I want the flexibility to run things other than WP. All my domains are registered with a separate registrar and just pointed at the VPS.

For some of my clients, I only provide e-mail. Some access via IMAP and for one I provide an SMTP feed to their onsite mail server. I would like to keep this facility.

I also need to provide https, via something like Lets Encrypt. I can't do this at the moment. So I use the Cloudflare Plugin for WP Sites as a workaround.

I currently pay £40 plus VAT (£48) a month and I, obviously, don't want to spend huge amounts more than this. I'd also like a UK based host.

I've been looking at guru.co.uk's Reseller Cloud Hosting Pro account and wonder if anyone has any experience of them and how this account would fit with my needs? I'm also open to any other suggestions anyone might have.

Thanks in advance.

Cloud Hosting Experience / GoDaddy, can't remove old payment methods
« on: August 10, 2018, 03:14:38 AM »

Has anybody else here who's a GoDaddy customer ever had this issue? I've tried removing old card numbers for cancelled/expired cards and my recent bank card is the default payment method but it always says an error occurred while processing this request. I've tried it with different browsers too, same issue.
