When it comes to choosing the right hosting package and the platform for the website many people get confused and select the hosting package and platform which is not perfect for their website. Many people think that Windows hosting is the right platform just because the operating system on their desktop/laptop is Windows. This is not how you choose the hosting platform for your website. Most of the websites on the internet are hosted on Linux servers. All the websites hosted on the Linux servers can be easily accessed and managed through your Windows Desktop/Laptops.

Windows platform should be considered only if you need Microsoft applications, such as ASP, ASP.Net, Coldfusion, MSSQL Server or MS Access databases to run your website. If your website is based on any of these Microsoft applications only then you need to go for a Windows based hosting package. If you are not using these Microsoft applications to run your website or if these terms are absolutely new to you, Linux based hosting would be an ideal option for you.

Both platforms have their own unique features, advantages and disadvantages. If you are going to add dynamic content on your site using PHP or CGI scripts and want to interface with a mySQL database, then you should choose UNIX for better compatibility with these applications. However, if you are going to use ASP/Access scripting combinations, ColdFusion, VB scripts or a MS SQL Server database, then choose Windows.

UNIX-based hosting is generally seen as being more stable, it also performs faster and can be more secure since most malicious software is written to cause damage to Windows. However, you will need Windows hosting if you are going to develop in .NET or Visual Basic.
