Linux is an open source OS and it provides more security compared to Windows hosting. Alternatively Windows server provides a GUI interface whereas Linux requires commands to maintain your server. Finally Linux server are much cheaper compared to Windows server.

Having access to the source code is probably the single most significant difference between Linux and Windows. The fact that Linux belongs to the GNU Public License ensures that users (of all sorts) can access (and alter) the code to the very kernel that serves as the foundation of the Linux operating system.

Linux Hosting

1. Linux hosting uses open source software. It gives you multiple options for hosting requirements. Linux hosting is compatible with PHP which is considered to be one of the most popular languages for programming.
2. Linux hosting is good for practicing programmers as they can keep testing new things with it. That’s the biggest advantage of using Linux.
3. Linux hosting is very cheap and affordable. Over head expenses are reduced in Linux as proprietary softwares are not installed.
4.Linux hosting is not compatible with windows applications and the coding conversions. It can be a serious issue with websites that are designed for windows based application. This is considered to be the major disadvantage.

Windows Hosting

1. Windows hosting is provided by Microsoft. By using windows hosting you will get regular support and updates. One of the major advantages of using windows hosting is that majority of the people who use windows as an OS on the computer find it to be user friendly. You get an option of using popular Microsoft tools such as MS FrontPage, MS Access and MS SQL.

2. Windows hosting generally requires a lot of system resources like a very powerful machine to run it. It lacks server stability which is known to everyone. It requires reboot more frequently. Most of the products needed are of Microsoft so additional investment is needed for development tools which is more expensive. You won’t get too many free applications with it.

Linux and Windows are two different kinds of operating systems. Linux is the more popular operating system between the two. However, you may have websites that need specific Windows applications. Depending on your needs, you can choose between the two hosting options.

A Linux hosting package is perfect for those who want access to ready-to-use, open-source applications. On the other hand, a Windows hosting package is ideal for those who want to build more complex websites using languages like Perl, ASP, PHP, etc.
